Chairman's Message

Govt. of West Bengal established the West Bengal Zoo Authority in the year 2010 for the development and scientific management of govt. controlled zoos in the state.The West Bengal Zoo Authority is a 14 members body of the decision makers and experts from the field. There are 12 nos Govt. controlled zoos in the state of West Bengal which are presently being managed by the Zoo Authority.The West Bengal Zoo Authority is also managing/funding eight number specially established Conservation Breeding Centres in the state.

The Main objective of zoos as par the National Zoos Policy,1998 is to complement and strenghten the national efforts in the conservation of rich biodiversity of the country particularly, the wild fauna. The objective can be achieved through co-ordinated conservation breeding of the endangered species and raising stock for rehabilitating them in the wild as and when it is appropriated and desirable, Conservation education and research for Conservation.The zoos shall also continue to function as rescue centre for seized, diseased, orphaned or old wild animals by providing appropriate housing and up keep.The zoos are managed as per the standards and norms prescribed in the Recognition of Zoos Rules,2009.

Govt. of West Bengal provides Grant-in-Aid annually to the West Bengal Zoo Authority for the proper scientific management and development of zoos in the state. The internal Resources raised by the zoos including the gate entry collection are also plough back for the maintenance and development of zoos. The good no.of officers from the different Departments of Govt of West Bengal are on deputation to the WestBengal Zoo Authority for its day to day functioning.
